Changing Filters: The Key to an Efficient, Healthy Heating System

Most homeowners don't think about their furnace a lot. Hopefully, when they turn on the thermostat, they hear it kick on, the air temperature warms up, and life is good. But there's one simple thing that can keep the furnace running well, and many homeowners forget to do it. Changing the filter is the easiest way to keep your heating system happy.

If you don't change your air filter, the existing one will build up with dirt. While that doesn't sound like a reason to get too uptight, it can have some negative consequences. A dirty filter can:
  1. Cause your furnace to run less efficiently, meaning it will have to work harder because of reduced airflow. That, in turn, will translate to higher heating bills.
  2. Cause build-up of dirt in other parts of the system. When the filter is dirty, then the furnace itself and air ducts will collect more dirt, which can lead to more maintenance issues over time.
  3. Reduce the life span of your HVAC system. Unfortunately, forgetting this simple step can result in the early demise of your furnace.
  4. Reduce air quality. When the filter is clogged, more allergens and dust are released into the air, causing health problems for residents.
Changing the filter in the furnace is a simple, 5 minute job. Simply pick up a replacement filter at any home improvement store, slide the old one out, and the new one in. Add it to your calendar so you remember to do it every month, and you can feel good that you're being proactive about keeping your family's heating system working well.

In addition to changing the filter, it's a good idea to have a Maple Shade NJ heating professional look over your heating system once a year before cold weather arrives. This will ensure everything is working well and when that first cold snap hits, you will be ready.
